Who Are These People?

R & R Acres was founded in 1977 in Boone, Iowa. It was not the beginning, however of the love of equine by Richard and Rita. Richard has been involved with shetland ponies since the 1960’s and Rita became involved with them when we were married. While shetland ponies have always been in our lives, we have also been involved with quarter horses, mules and miniature donkeys. We love them all!

We live on a small acreage near Boone, Iowa. It is within easy access to DesMoines, Iowa (Boone is about 50 miles NW) and Ames, Iowa which is 15 miles East and is home of Iowa State University. We are "seasoned" citizens with a great love for horses of all kinds, but most recently the miniature horse. We have been continuous members of ASPC/AMHR since 1980. We were introduced to the miniature through our shetland ponies and the shows that we attended and managed in the early 1990’s. As with the shetlands, we got hooked!

Our trip through life with equine has taken us to the Circus World parade in Milwaukee where Richard had the privilege of being the co-driver for Jon & Mary Nissen and their 24 (yes, 24) miniature donkeys. We have also had the extreme privilege of attending the World Pair Driving Championships in Gladbrook, N.J. It is the "olympics" of driving and it was an honor to be present for the only time the event was held in the USA.

We plan to be involved with our small equine until health prohibits us from doing so which we hope is a long way off. Richard is an ASPC/AMHR licensed steward and we both remain active in many other ways with our horses, such as shows, sales, clubs, and any other way we can find time to participate in.

We also find time to spend with our 7 children and 14 grandchildren ages 9 to 24.
